Corporation Profile

The Association’s emphasis is on programs, which provide developmentally disabled persons opportunities for education, recreation, employment and support toward the goal of independent, dignified living. In addition, the Association seeks to enhance existing programs, to improve staff-resident relations, and to provide an educational and social medium to improve the quality of life and general morale for residents and staff.

The Fernald Center is a publicly-funded residential care facility qualifying as an intermediate care facility for the developmentally disabled under Title XIX of the Social Security Act, and which maintains and operates a multi-level nursing facility on the campus. The Center, and the services it renders to the surrounding communities comprising Region VI, is under the aegis of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Mental Retardation.

More specifically, the Association has engaged in, or conducted, activities, such as the following:

  • Parties for Residents:  Annual Hoe-Down, a country themed party, with a caller and wheel chair square dancing, a Halloween costume party complete with a seven-piece band and prizes for best costumes.

  • Annual Volunteer & Employee Recognition Dinner: Spring-time social and ceremonial event saluting volunteers and staff who have distinguished themselves over the previous year.

  • Monthly Birthday Parties:  Residents of Fernald have their birthdays celebrated monthly with entertainment and refreshments.

  • Holiday Wish List: Identification of desired gifts ("wishes") of all residents of Fernald and Community residences in the area, followed by purchasing, wrapping and distributing of gifts (an estimated 1,500 gifts valued at $35,000) each holiday season.

  • Annual Fernald Holiday Raffle:  Among other events, all serving to raise funds needed to carry out above-described projects.
